How Gymnastics Boosts Bone Strength in Young Girls: A 6-Month Study

Participating in gymnastics during childhood offers more than just fun and fitness—it can have significant benefits for bone strength and muscle development. A recent six-month study explored how regular gymnastics training impacts skeletal health in young girls, specifically focusing on the forearm. The findings offer valuable insights into how this dynamic sport can contribute to stronger bones and overall musculoskeletal development during critical growth periods.

The study followed 84 girls aged 6-12, dividing them into three groups based on their gymnastics participation: high-training gymnasts (HGYM), low-training gymnasts (LGYM), and non-gymnasts (NONGYM). Using a specialised technique called peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT), researchers measured bone density, muscle size, and bone strength in the non-dominant forearm. Additionally, they assessed muscle function through tests of strength and explosive power. The results were clear—gymnasts had significantly greater bone mass, larger muscles, and stronger bones compared to non-gymnasts.

What’s particularly interesting is the dose-response relationship found in the study. Girls who participated in more frequent gymnastics sessions saw greater improvements in bone strength and muscle size, especially in the forearm, which bears much of the load during activities like handstands and tumbling. This suggests that the weight-bearing nature of gymnastics is key to promoting bone health, particularly during the early years when bone growth is most rapid.

These findings emphasise the importance of weight-bearing sports like gymnastics in promoting long-term bone health and muscle development. Early participation in such activities could help set a foundation for stronger bones, reducing the risk of fractures and bone-related issues later in life.
